Advice for buying real estate in Jamaica Plain
Written by William Brokhof on April 29th, 2009
Summary:
They are now hiring actors to play neighbors, and these people interact with potential buyers in a casual way. They even stage Little League games with child actors, full church services with actors, and actors to jog around the neighborhood and wave to you as they run by. Crazy! Obviously this isn’t so much of a concern in Boston, but it’s very interesting to think about the lengths that agents are trying to go to especially in those neighborhoods that have tons of foreclosed homes.
OMG! I was reading one of my favorite blogs,
Apartment Therapy, and I came across a piece in which
Cynthia was asking for advice in purchasing a condo in
Jamaica Plain. I thought, “oh, this is right up my alley.” There where 22 comments after only one day. Clearly there was no shortage of opinions on the subject. Here’s the rub. There was quite a bit of positive advice and anecdotal info. However, there was a ton of crap. Don’t get me wrong, there are some agents who don’t deserve to be let of the used car lot out there, but some of the info here is just way wrong. I love the one that says that agents are staging entire towns with actors. Little League games and all. That sounds like a great movie doesn’t it? I’m imagining the scene from Blazing Saddles where they build a whole town to lure the bad guys in so they can ambush them.
If you’re thinking about buying a house – don’t “bring your most negative relative”, don’t consult with shamans or only buy FSBOs. Interview at least three Buyer’s agents, and get some advocacy! Check out our testimonials on Yelp.
| This is less a question than a suggestion for discussion but I imagine there are other folks out there who could use similar guidance. My boyfriend and I are taking advantage of the down market and are officially in the market for a condo in the JP area! I’d love to hear stories, wisdom, and tips from the AT community on first time home buying; working with realtors, mortgage agents, and lawyers; balancing moving with renovations; and working with neighbors/condo associations on maintenance and other issues. Thanks so much! Cynthia |

Buying a home anywhere is a great idea right now if you can get the approval. Boston still has a very good market in comparison the rest of the country and your advice is laid out real well for potential Home Buyers.
