Let’s All Go the Movies!!

We’re big, big movie fans over here at the Boston Home Team headquarters. Hollywood movies, independent cinema, foreign films, we love ‘em all! We love our community too!

So in 2024 we’re aiming to sponsor a bunch of movie nights where we can share our cinephilia with our like-minded neighbors.

We’ve got a 10 foot screen, several hundred watts of sound, and a nifty 4K projector just waiting for the lights to go down!

Our first effort will be in service of fundraising for the Substation Community Supporters, a local charitable organization run by the good people at The Substation in Roslindale Village.

A brief note about The Substation Community Supporters: TSCS has a clear and focused mission to make arts and cultural programming more available and affordable to artists and our community, and to preserve the historic substation landmark in Roslindale Square.

This organization will secure grants and donations to make The Substation more available to local artists, performers, and producers, particularly BIPOC/ALAANA and LGBTQ+ community members by reducing or eliminating rental fees for them. Funding will also help subsidize the high operating and maintenance costs associated with managing a historic site to keep programming low cost or free to the public. We can’t wait to see what activations are possible with your support!

So what’s showing? We wanted to kick things off w/ a double feature. The theme (loosely) is the buddy movie trope. You know, when two mismatched folks get thrown together and, perhaps enemies at first, find common ground, see through the barriers between them, etc.

First up is the epic animated masterpiece, How to Train Your Dragon. Family friendly, it’s a brilliantly told story of a young misfit Viking who befriends the dragon his overbearing father sent him to kill and eventually helps to demystify the distrust and fear between humans and dragons. It’s got some great action too. If your kids haven’t seen this one yet, it’s definitely worth an introduction.

Second, for the grownups, is the great and hilarious Midnight Run. If you’ve seen it, then you already know. If you haven’t seen it but you love a good “buddy comedy”, then come for DeNiro and Grodin and stay for the laughs. Though he plays the straight man, this is DeNiro’s very first comedy, and man, is he funny. Charles Grodin, of course, no stranger to comedy, is at his understated best in this cross country road romp. We watch this almost annually and it seems to get funnier every year!

You can get tickets in advance here (it’s $5 for kids and $10 for adults - $6/$12 at the door). 100% of the proceeds will go to charity. The doors open at 5:30 pm and the first movie starts at 6. The Substation folks are graciously donating the space & popcorn while the Boston Home Team is bringing the lights, camera, action!!
